The "It" Factor
"He's my new favorite bobsledder!" I stated as Steve Holcomb and the rest of his team finished their last run in the four man bobsled competiton. It didn't matter that I didn't have an old favorite bobsledder or that I won't see another bobsled race for at least four years, I was right away drawn to the the Pilot of USA 1.
Steve Holcomb, a man one writer described as looking like George Costanza and driving like Mario Andretti, climbed out of the sled and celebrated with his team. I had found my favorite bobsledder. Holcomb is a guy who teammates describe as an every man. He isn't afraid to get his hands dirty performing ordinary maintenance on the team's sled. he rose through the ranks of bobsledding, beginning as a pusher (those guys in the middle who push at the beginning and then are along for the ride). He honed his reflexes by, among other things, playing video games. Oh yeah, a few years ago Holcomb was basically blind. He suffered from a condition that caused his cornea to bulge and eventually the situation was remedied through surgery.
Steve Holcomb is just a guy. A guy who plays video games. A guy who is a little pudgy. A guy who is balding. He is also a guy who is a tremendous leader. A guy who teammates will run through a wall for. he is a guy who has "it".
It is hard to define. We know when someone has it, and we know when someone is missing it. We definitely can tell when we have it and when we are missing it! It is something that we all want and need, but often don't know where to find.
This Easter we will discover it toghether. We'll unpack the Easter story in Luke 24 and learn, Who did it, How to believe it, How to share it and even how to hold onto it.
